Phallus flavidus

Phallus flavidus is a species of fungus in the family Stinkmorchelverwandten ( Phallaceae ). It was discovered in the Seychelles in 2009.

Features

Macroscopic characteristics

Ripe fruit bodies go from one to 2 cm wide, spherical " Hexenei " out of which the surface is colored light gray and has a hint of orange. The stalk of the mature fruit body is 5-8 cm high and 0.8-1.2 cm wide. He is cylindrical ( upwards narrowing ), spongy, hollow, off-white to yellowish, but colored light orange back to the top. Located on the tip of the stem, a conical, 2.5 × 2 cm large hat, which is pale orange colored, has a network-like surface and is covered by the olive-brown gleba. The gleba is smelly and the smell reminds her of sperm or raw potatoes. From the bottom of the cap a cream to yellow, net-like structure ( Indusium ) hangs down, which does not reach to the ground.

Microscopic properties

The spores are cylindrical, smooth and yellowish. They are 2.8-3.6 × 1.5-1.8 microns in size.

Artabgrenzung

Phallus flavidus resembles a variety of tropical and subtropical species phallus, which are characterized by a yellow, orange or red Indusium and an equally colored pileus:

  • Phallus indusiatus f citrinus from tropical India is very similar to the color of her, but has a larger fruiting bodies and larger spores.
  • Phallus luteus from Japan is also very similar, but is much larger and has a longer indusium, which reaches to the bottom.
  • Phallus multicolor, a pantropical common type is colored very variable. Both the pileus, the stem, and the indusium, which extends only rarely to the ground, are yellowish to orange. The fruit bodies are medium in size.
  • Phallus cinnabarinus from Taiwan has a vermilion Indusium and pileus. The 10 cm long Indusium hangs from a 7-13 cm large fruiting bodies.

Unlike the species already mentioned the witches eggs of Phallus flavidus missing the pink or purple pigments that occur very frequently in the other species. All previously mentioned Phallus species grow on the ground. In contrast, phallus flavocostatus stand and related species (all without indusium ) that grow on decaying wood and have very little to dwarf fruiting bodies.

Ecology

Phallus flavidus appear singly or in small groups on the ground of ruderal areas that are overgrown with tall grass.

Dissemination

The species is native to the Seychelles, but has so far been found only on the island of Mahé.

Find out more

Flavidus phallus is the smallest, indusiate phallic phallus Art rubrovolvatus from Yunnan, however, is with a height of up to 33 cm, the largest " veil lady "; within the non- indusiaten phallic phallus pygmaeus species is from Brazil, with only 0, 5-1 cm in height, the smallest Stinkmorchel, whereas phallus favosus from the mountains of Indonesia is up to 35 cm high and thus is the largest species of the genus phallus.
