Philip D. Murphy

Philip D. Murphy ( * 1957 near Boston, Massachusetts) is an American diplomat and investment banker. From 2009 to 2013 he was United States Ambassador to Germany.

In July 2013 Murphy came from as ambassador. He is succeeded by John B. Emerson.

Life

Murphy graduated in 1979 from Harvard University with a degree in Economics ( AB in Economics) and in 1983 at the Wharton School of the University of Pennsylvania, an MBA From 1993 to 1997 Murphy directed the Frankfurt office of Goldman Sachs, where he was responsible for the activities in Germany, Switzerland and Austria, as well as in the then emerging economies of Central Europe. From 1997 to 1999, Murphy President of Goldman Sachs ( Asia). In all, he spent 23 years at Goldman Sachs, where he held a number of senior positions before becoming Senior Director of the Company in 2003 was what he remained until his retirement in 2006.

After working at Goldman Sachs Murphy was 2006-2009 National Chairman for the financial affairs of the National Committee of the Democrats.

In the 2008 presidential campaign Murphy raised funds for Obama. On August 7, 2009 he was confirmed as Ambassador -designate of the United States of America to the Federal Republic of Germany by the U.S. Senate. On 21 August 2009 he met with his family in Berlin. On 3 September 2009 he was accredited by Federal President Horst Köhler Murphy who accepted credentials.

In the years of his tenure at Goldman Sachs Murphy has a strong commitment to social, community and charitable purposes. He was also a member of boards of directors or committee of the civil rights organization National Association for the Advancement of Colored People ( NAACP ), the Local Initiatives Support Corporation, the Center for American Progress, 180 Turning Lives Around and various programs of the University of Pennsylvania. In addition, Murphy was co-chair of a national working group for education in the 21st century and chairman of a working group that looked at the benefits for employees in the public service in his home state of New Jersey. Murphy was on the board of the American Football Federation USSF and its organizing committee for the application to host the World Cup. He played a leading role in bringing a concession for professional women's football to New Jersey.

Murphy is married and has four children.
