Philip Primrose

Philip Carteret Hill Primrose ( born October 23, 1864 in Halifax, Nova Scotia, † March 17, 1937 in Edmonton, Alberta ) was a Canadian politician and policeman. From 1936 until his death he was vice- governor of the province of Alberta.

Biography

Primrose was a distant relative of Archibald Philip Primrose, 5th Earl of Rosebery, 1894/95 Prime Minister of the United Kingdom. After the death of his father Primrose moved with his mother to Pictou. There he attended the local Academy after completion of schooling. He graduated ultimately at the Royal Military College in Kingston. In 1902 he married Lily Deane, the daughter of a superintendent. They had three children. His son Neil later worked as a judge of the Supreme Court of Alberta.

After Primrose had left the Royal Military College, he joined on 1 August 1885 as inspector in the North - West Mounted Police a. He was initially stationed Regina, later in Fort Saskatchewan. 1899 was promoted to Superintendent and sent during the Klondike Gold Rush in the Yukon Territory.
