Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel

Philogène Auguste Joseph Duponchel (* 1774 in Valenciennes, † 1846 in Paris) was a French soldier and entomologist.

After schooling in Douai, he joined with 16 years in the French army. After his discharge from the army he was administrative officer in Paris. However, he was in 1816, at the age of 42 years, was forced to resign because he had come out openly for Napoleon Bonaparte. Then he began the study of insects, especially butterflies ..

From 1821 he worked at the famous l' Histoire naturelle work of lépidoptères de France with Jean Baptiste Godart ( 1775-1825 ). After the death of Godart in 1825 he became sole editor (from Volume 6 ). The (total) work consists of 17 volumes, of which 12 appeared so under the sole direction of Duponchel. The 17 volumes contain over 7600 pages and 500 color plates. The authors described therein over 4000 species of butterflies (day and moths ).

Duponchel was a founding member of the Société entomologique de France and became its first treasurer. He was a close friend of Pierre François Marie Auguste Dejean, André Marie Constant Duméril and Pierre André Latreille.

He is buried in the cemetery at Montparnasse in Paris.

According to him the genus Duponchelia Zeller, 1847 from the family Crambidae ( superfamily Pyraloidea ) of butterflies is named.
