Phosphodiesterase 3

The phosphodiesterase 3a is an enzyme in vertebrates, which causes the degradation of cAMP. In humans it is found in the heart muscle cells and in the female body it leaves the mature oocytes in prophase I. cGMP repressed cAMP from the PDE3A thus inhibiting cAMP degradation.

Medical Applications

Through inhibition of phosphodiesterase, the force of contraction of the heart can be increased (positive inotropic effect ): By the increased accumulation of cAMP in the cardiac muscle cell, the protein kinase A is activated, which phosphorylates the calcium channel. This will open this increased and it can flow more calcium, the contractile force of the heart increases.
