Phosphodiesterase inhibitor

Phosphodiesterase inhibitors ( PDE ) inhibitors are drugs that inhibit the enzymes from the group of phosphodiesterases.

This may non- selectively all enzymes of this group or selectively a particular enzyme can be inhibited either.

  • Non-selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor (PDE ) inhibitors: methylxanthines such as caffeine, theophylline, theobromine, inhibit nonspecific different phosphodiesterases. Theophylline is used to treat chronic lung diseases, especially chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. Another non-specific PDE inhibitor is Trapidil used for the treatment of coronary heart disease.
  • Selective phosphodiesterase inhibitor PDE -3 inhibitors in acute heart failure
  • PDE 4 inhibitors in chronic lung disease
  • PDE -5 inhibitors for erectile dysfunction and pulmonary hypertension
