Alpha -5'- phosphoribosyl -1'- pyrophosphate is a chemical compound. Is a ribose (a sugar ) which is ( C5) is substituted with a phosphate group, and the C1 is connected to a pyrophosphate group at carbon 5. Phosphoribosyl occurs mainly as an intermediate in the metabolism of, for example, the biosynthesis of purine and pyrimidine nucleotides.

Further, it is required as a cosubstrate in the biosynthesis of NAD / NADP from nicotinic acid.

Phosphoribosyl pyrophosphate reacts with nicotinate, the anion of nicotinic acid, for Nikotinatmononucleotid with elimination of pyrophosphate ( PPi).

PRPP is synthesized in the body from ribose 5 -phosphate and ATP or deoxy ATP. Catalysis of the enzyme reaction takes Pyrophosphokinase ribose-phosphate.
