Piako River

The Piako River at Ngatea

The Piako River is a south of the Hauraki Gulf in the North Island of New Zealand situated river. He is, together with the Waihou River one of the most important rivers, which then deposited the alluvial deposits of the Hauraki Plains at the southern end of the Firth of Thames.

The two source rivers, Piakonui and Piakoiti stream, rise in the Te Miro Tahuroa Hills west of Matamata and unite south of Kereone for Piako River. The river flows 100 km to the north before reaching 5 km west of the Firth of Thames Thames. On its way it passes the towns of Morrinsville and Ngatea.

A bridge, the Piako River Bridge, across the river was built in 1917 in Ngatea. At that time the water transport through rivers and canals, the predominant transport. With the development of the first roads, the bridge was built as a connection between Auckland and Tauranga.
