Piatra Craiului Mountains

The Piatra Craiului mountains (Eng. also Königstein Mountains, rum. Piatra Craiului Munţii, Hungarian Királykő - hegység ) is an existing from Jurassic limestone mountain range in central Romania, near the city of Braşov. It is part of the Southern Carpathians Mountains and is located near the Carpathian angle on the territories of the circles and Arges Brasov; westward to close the Fagaras and Iezer Mountains, to the east the Leaota and the Bucegi Mountains at.

The 25 km long ridge runs perpendicular to the main ridge of the Southern Carpathians in the north-south direction. The highest peak is the Piscul Baciului (also Om La, 2,238 m). Since 1990, the Piatra Craiului mountains is protected as a national park covering an area of ​​148 km2. Funded by a World Bank project, has existed since 1999, a National Park Service, based in Zărneşti. In spring 2007, a new visitor center has been built in this place.

The region is fairly well developed for tourism; there is a dense network of hiking trails and several mountain huts and refuges.
