Piazza al Serchio

Piazza al Serchio is an Italian commune in the province of Lucca in Tuscany with 2463 inhabitants ( 31 December 2012).

The place consists of several scattered small villages in the Upper Serchio valley. The districts are Borsig Liana / Vergnano, Cogna, Colognola, Gragnana, Livignano, Petrognano, Petrognola, Nicciano / Cortia, Sant'anastasio, San Donnino, and San Michele. The neighboring communities are Camporgiano, Giuncugnano, Minucciano, San Romano in Garfagnana and Sillano.

The name means place on the Serchio and goes to a place back on the market were kept in the Middle Ages for the surrounding villages. Until the 19th century it was called Pieve di Castelvecchio, after a fortress partially preserved. This protected in the Middle Ages the passes north and west.

Piazza al Serchio is located on State Road 445 and on the railway line Lucca - Aulla.
