History and construction

The PIK -11 Tumppu was a single-seat, single-engine light aircraft, which was designed as a cantilever low- wing monoplane with enclosed cockpit and solid spur wheel chassis. It was the first powered aircraft, which was developed and produced by Polyteknikkojen Ilmailukerho. The goal was to develop a cheap -to-build and easy to fly aircraft for flight sports clubs.

Work on the project was started in 1948 by Kai Mellen and Ilkka Lounanmaa under the direction of Professor Arvo Ylinen. The first flight took place on 15 March 1953. Prototype still exists and is on display at the Finnish Aviation Museum. A copy was registered in 2008 in the Finnish aircraft register.

For several years the Vaasan Lentokerho ry works -. Vasa Flygklubb rf. on a replica of the PIK -11 to be powered by a Rotax 912 engine.
