Pingtung County

The Pingtung County (Chinese屏东 县, Pinyin Pingdong Xiàn, Tongyong Pinyin Pingdong Sian ) is the southernmost district of the Republic of China on Taiwan. Its capital is the city of Pingtung.

Location

The Pingtung County is bordered on the northwest by the city of Kaohsiung, on the northeast by the Taitung County, in the southeast, the Pacific Ocean and on the west by the South China Sea.

The east in the north- west of the county location of Kaohsiung Pingtung Pingtung plain around the capital is the most densely populated part and the industrial center of the district. The south and east is occupied by the southern foothills of the central mountain region of Taiwan, which reach heights of over 3,000 m on the northeastern county boundary.

At the southern tip is the up in 1984, Kenting National Park, which is a major tourist destination with tropical beaches, coral reefs and rainforests.

For Pingtung County is one of about 15 km off the west coast located 6.8 km ² coral island Liuqiu (小琉球).

Cities and Towns

Only large city (市, Shì ) and by far the largest city is about 215,000 inhabitants, Pingtung county town. Then there are the three townships (镇, zhen ) Chaozhou (潮州 镇), Donggang (东 港镇) and Hengchun (恒春 镇) and 29 rural communities (乡, Xiang ).
