Pio Fedi
Pio Fedi ( born June 7, 1815 in Viterbo, † May 31, 1892 in Florence ) was an Italian sculptor and engraver.
Life and work
Pio Fedi made initially in Florence trained as a goldsmith with a master on the Ponte Vecchio. After that, he was at the Academy of Fine Arts in Florence students of Raffaello Morghen ( drawing) and Giovanni Garaviglia ( copper engraving ). In 1838 he went to Vienna, where he was in the Belvedere Palace and the gallery Schwarzenberg. He attended the local academy and soon earned a scholarship to visit Rome, where he studied until 1844. After a Säureverätzung the eyes he gave up the engraving with regard to his eyes and turned to sculpture. Returned to Florence in 1846, he was commissioned by Leopold II commissioned the statues of Nicola Pisano and Andrea Cesalpino run for the loggia of the Uffizi. In 1856, the colossal statue of the Marquis P. Torrigiano falls in the garden of the family. His most famous work is the colossal group of the robbery of Polyxena. It occupies a place of honor in the Loggia dei Lanzi in Florence and is able to bring down beside the works of antiquity and the Renaissance advantage. It was carried out from 1860 to 1865 in marble. Pyrrhus, son of Achilles, enters upon the altar, holding in his left arm which Polyxena, while he raises his rights with a drawn sword against Hecuba, who has thrown himself at his feet. In front of her and between the feet of Pyrrhus is the fallen in battle brother Polyxenas.
