Piteå Municipality

Piteå is a municipality (Swedish kommun ) in the northern Swedish province of Norrbotten County and the historic province of Norrbotten.

Center of the municipality is the city of Piteå. Other notable towns are Bergsviken, Blåsmark, Böle, Hemmingsmark, Hortlax, Jävre, Lillpite, Norrfjärden, Roknäs, Rosvik, Sikfors, Sjulsmark, Svensbyn and Öjebyn. Through the village leads the European route E4.

Geography

Piteå is a coastal community on the Gulf of Bothnia. From the coastal plain the municipal area rises to a wooded hill country.

Economy

In addition to larger industrial companies such as Smurfit- Kappa and SCA (production of kraft liner paper for board manufacture = ) with two factories there are also some medium-sized companies. Also, the service sector and tourism are major sectors of the economy.

Currently (August 2010) Europe's largest wind farm will be installed in the vicinity of the city of Piteå that is to provide 4,000 megawatts of power Ting upon completion.

Attractions

Apart from the city of Piteå is especially Öjebyn, 5 kilometers north- west of Piteå to mention. Öjebyn was actually the old Piteå, before the city was moved to its present location due to the Scandinavian land uplift. Then Öjebyn church village was filled with about 175 Church cottages. The church dates from the 14th century.

6 km south-east of Piteå is a well-known beach.
