Piwik

Piwik is an open source program for web analytics. It is the successor of the now-defunct project " phpMyVisites ".

It is funded by sponsors and has been available since November 21, 2008 by SourceForge.net as a hosted application for developers.

The functionality includes:

  • Statistics on page views on a daily and cumulative periods as Echtzeitlog

Piwik is an alternative to Google Analytics. It has the advantage of storing the data protection law sensitive log data on your own server.

Since publication of the first version 0.1 on 6 March 2009 Piwik was almost 1,650,000 times downloaded (as of March 2014). In Germany Piwik is the most widely used web analytics tool by Google Analytics.

Technology

Piwik is written in PHP and uses a MySQL database. The visitor count is done with JavaScript, or Web beacons, via an API or a Logdateianalyse.

Server side, the libraries Zend Framework, PEAR and Smarty, client side use jQuery.

The log files are stored non- relational and regularly aggregated and gestaget for large instances via cron, on days periods. This archive data per month stored in individual tables.

The graphical user interface ( GUI) is web-based graphs are shown with Canvas elements since version 1.5. All figures can be queried using a REST API. This API also uses Piwik Connector, a desktop program based on Adobe Air In addition, through a REST API in the CSV format, XML and JSON all the information requested and the software can be controlled.

With version 1.8.2 numerous revisions have been made, such as in the presentation of graphical data analysis. Same time, new features have been added, such as the possibility of importing and evaluating of web server log files, the creation of custom dashboards and displaying advanced reports.
