Platinum (II ) chloride is one of several of the chemical element of platinum chlorides. In addition there exist platinum ( IV) chloride, and the mixed compound of platinum ( II, IV ) chloride PtCl3 consisting of platinum (II) - and platinum ( IV) chloride. It is a green solid at room temperature.

Production and representation

Platinum (II) chloride is produced at 550 ° C of the elements.

It can be represented in a vacuum by decomposition of platinum (IV ) chloride at 360 ° C or by evaporation of hydrochloric acid ( stable only in solution) Tetrachloroplatin (II ) acid H2 [ PtCl 4 ] solutions.

Properties

Platinum (II ) chloride is present in two modifications, the red and black Hochtemperaturmodfikation α - PtCl2 that is stable above 500 ° C, and the green β - modification which is stable at lower temperatures. β - PtCl 2 crystallizes in a hexagonal crystal structure, the α - PtCl2 corner- and edge-sharing PtCl4 units are suspected.
