Platinum ( IV) chloride is an inorganic chemical compound of the platinum from the group of chlorides.

Production and representation

Platinum ( IV) chloride is produced when dissolving platinum in aqua regia by decay of the initially formed Hexachloridoplatinsäure; the deep but pure yellow solution gives on evaporation a reddish-brown mass of salt, which is reddish brown in expelling the water of crystallization.

It can also be obtained by chlorination of platinum with sulfuryl chloride under vacuum at 350 ° C.

Properties

Platinum ( IV) chloride is a red-brown crystalline and hygroscopic salt. It tastes unconstitutional sharp metallic, is soluble in water, ethanol and diethyl ether, stained reddish brown organic substances, when heated are greenish gray, insoluble platinum (II ) chloride PtCl2 and leaves eventually platinum.

It is hygroscopic and will absorb water on standing in air until light yellow pentahydrate PtCl4 · 5H2O on.

Platinum (IV ) chloride has an orthorhombic crystal structure with space group Pbca.
