Ploërmel
Ploërmel is a commune with 9221 inhabitants (as of January 1, 2011 ) in the department of Morbihan in the Brittany region. It belongs to the district Vannes and Canton Ploërmel.
History
- On March 26, 1351 during the Breton War of Succession ( 1350-1370 Ploërmel was under British occupation ) the famous tournament of the Thirty found halfway between Josselin and Ploërmel near the village instead. 1828 a commemorative obelisk was erected on the same site.

- On 10 December 2006, a 9 -meter-high bronze statue of Pope John Paul II was unveiled in the city, a gift from the sculptor Zurab Tsereteli, honorary citizen of Ploërmel; rose up against this statue is considerable opposition, especially since it is prohibited in France since 1905 to set up religious symbols in public places.
- Paul Anselin, mayor of Ploërmel, won the Big Brother Award 2006, because - despite low crime rate - was in a town of less than 10,000 inhabitants, 50 surveillance cameras installed or installing.
