The Moreton Bay Steineibe ( Podocarpus macrophyllus, Syn. Taxus macrophylla Thunb ) is a plant of the genus Podocarpus ( Podocarpus ) within the Department of conifers ( Pinophyta ).
Dissemination
It is the furthest advancing northward species of the genus; their home is in southern Japan and southern China. It occurs from sea level prior to 1000 meters. In southeastern North America it is a relatively popular ornamental and hedge plant.
Description
The Moreton Bay Steineibe is an evergreen, small to medium-sized tree, the plant height 5-20 meters and trunk diameter can reach up to 60 cm. The leaves are strip-shaped and 6-12 cm long at about 1 cm wide; striking is the raised central rib.
This species is dioecious getrenntgeschlechtig ( dioecious ). The flowering period extends from April to May The aril of a coated seeds ripen in August to October, then 1 to 2 cm long. The seeds are dispersed by birds. The aril is edible, it is not recommended while eating the seeds themselves.
