Policoro

Policoro is a place in the province of Matera the Italian region of Basilicata.

In Policoro 16,327 inhabitants ( December 31, 2012). The town is located 70 km south of Matera. The neighboring municipalities are Rotondella, Scanzano Jonico and Tursi.

On the territory of the municipality lies the ancient Greek city of Heraclea. By the year 1959, the place was a district of the village Montalbano Jonico.

Heraclea

In the archaeological park of the town is the archaeological site of Heraclea. There is also the Museo Nazionale Delle Siritide. This displays finds from the excavation sites.
