Ponsacco

Ponsacco is a municipality with 15,267 inhabitants (as of 31 December 2012) in the Province of Pisa in the Tuscany region of Italy.

Geography

The municipality covers 20 km ². It is located about 50 km southwest of Florence and 20 km southeast of Pisa. The village lies on the rivers Era and Cascina, in the climatic classification of Italian communities in the zone D, 1874 GG

The districts include Camugliano, Le Melorie and Val di Cava.

The neighboring municipalities are Capannoli, Casciana Terme Lari and Pontedera.

History

The first mention of the place under the name Pontem Sacci on February 17, 1197 was in a document of the Archdiocese of Lucca. Due to its location, the community and its districts in the Middle Ages several times the scene of hostilities between Pisa, Lucca and Florence was changed several times and the Republic of affiliation between those of the Pisan and Florentine. When the Republic of Florence in 1341 in the war against Pisa, the castles and the surrounding villages of Appiano and Petriolo completely destroyed, their inhabitants found refuge in the Castello Ponte di Sacco. 1365 the site was equipped with a city wall that still stands erected existing historic center and built an irrigation system, which was fed by the river Cascina. With the defeat of Pisa also Ponsacco 1406 managed under Florentine rule, but was recaptured in 1494. 1509 it fell again to Florence, while the towers and large parts of the city walls were destroyed.
