Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace

The Pontifical Council for Justice and Peace (Latin: Pontifical Consilium de Justice and Pace ) was at the suggestion of the Second Vatican Council on 6 January 1967 the Motu Proprio Catholicam Christi Ecclesiam Paul VI. built as a Pontifical Commission for Justice and Peace.

With the Motu Proprio Iustitiam et Pacem of 10 December 1976, the Commission became an integral Pontifical Council within the Curia.

Under John Paul II, the Commission for Justice and Peace through the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of 28 June 1988 was raised to the Pontifical Council. The same Constitution defines the role of the Council as " to promote in the light of justice and the social teachings of the Church Justice and Peace in the World".
