Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity

The Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity (Latin: Pontifical Consilium ad Unitatem Christianorum Fovendam; Italian: Pontifical consiglio per la promozione dell'Unita dei cristiani ) was born on June 5, 1960 by Pope John XXIII. founded under the name Secretariat for Promoting Christian Unity, as the Preparatory Commission for the Second Vatican Council.

Ending of the Council, the Secretariat had contributed significantly to the emergence of the Council documents

After the end of the Council confirmed Paul VI. the Secretariat as a permanent institution of the Apostolic See.

By the Apostolic Constitution Pastor Bonus of 28 June 1988, the Secretariat received its present name.

According to the decree Unitatis Redintegratio it is for the Council " to promote dialogue and cooperation with other Churches and Christian world communions ".

Until the resumption of official dialogue with the Orthodox Churches by the Pontifical Council in 2004, the unofficial dialogue on the Wiener Foundation Pro Oriente was held.

They are complemented by the Commission for Religious Relations with the Jews
