Postcodes in the United Kingdom

In the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland postcodes were introduced in its current form in October 1959. The assignment was completed in 1974. The postal codes are assigned one of the following schemes:

( A = letter, 0 = number)

The zip code is under the place name, for example:

Duxford CB2 4RG

Regions

The first letter combination indicates the region, the combination is the abbreviated name of the main town of the region:

Subdivision

These regions (post code areas) are divided into sub- regions ( postcode districts), whose code ( one or two digits ) followed without gap. Example: CB2.

The number-letter combination in the second part of the post code ( in ( was ) code) identifies the delivery post (sector part) and the delivery area and local districts, as well as roads or road sections (unit part). The inner cities usually form the District 1

Example: The York Minster in Yorkshire has the postal code YO1 7JF.

An exception to the above system is the city of London, who knew postal districts even before the introduction of today's postal code system, based on the postal districts of 1856. These are for a revision in 1917 remain valid.

  • Central London: EC / WC (East Central and West Central)
  • For the rest of the London postal district: N, NW, SW, SE, W and E (North, North -West, South-West, South - East, West and East)

Due to the size of London more zip codes have been created by the addition of a suffix for the central districts: EC1A 1AA.

Important institutions of the United Kingdom have given their own, some random zip codes:

  • SW1A 0AA - House of Commons
  • SW1A 0PW - House of Lords, Palace of Westminster
  • SW1A 1AA - Buckingham Palace
  • SW1A 2AA - 10 Downing Street, Prime Minister and First Lord of the Treasury
  • SW1A 2AB - 11 Downing Street, Chancellor of the Exchequer
  • SW1A 2HQ - Royal Treasury

The British Overseas Territories have only the classification 1ZZ ( ASCN 1ZZ for Ascension Iceland ), respectively.
