Prekaja

Prekaja (Cyrillic: Прекаја ) is a village in western Bosnia and Herzegovina. The origin of the village name is not known, probably comes from the appearance or the location of the place.

Geography

The village lies in the Opština Drvar in the west part of Bosnia. Prekaja is located on the right bank of the river Unac, which marks the western boundary of the village; the eastern boundary is the mountain Ruppe Klekovača. The village is surrounded by the mountains Javorova Kosa, Vršina, Kolo and Lauševac. From the village Župice separate Prekaja, the mountains and Sklop Orlovača. From the village of Donji Sklop Mokronoga the mountain.

Village outline

Prekaja is a scattered settlement, which consists of eight parts: Kralji, Podbrina, Prekaja, Vranovica, Mracaj, Kotlina, Zupa Pavići and Glavice. The center of the village is the village of Kotlina. The village houses are mostly along the shore at Uvac. Only a few houses are located at the foot of the mountains to Prekaja. Around the center, are located in other parts of the village, some are higher and others lower than the center of the village. The village ends are not far apart, but there are also houses that are scattered farther away. Nikola Špirić an important politician of the Serbs in Bosnia and Herzegovina. He is born in Prekaja, helped with the return of Serb refugees from Prekaja and helped in restoring the infrastructure of the village.

Population

The majority of the inhabitants regarded as Serbs. In the past few Yugoslavs, Croats and Bosniaks lived in the town.

Religion

The population of Prekaja committed primarily to the Serbian Orthodox Church. In the village the Serbian Orthodox Church of the Dormition Church is from the year 1887. The church was restored in 2008. There are six cemeteries: Crkvina, Bunarina, Thu, Dražica, grobnica and Župić.

Reservoir Prekajsko Jezero

At the village, a man-made reservoir in the second half of the 20th century, was built. The dam was needed for the industry in Drvar. The lake was named Prekajsko Lake. The name of the lake is derived from the village name.
