Prince Frederick of Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen

Friedrich Eugen Johann Prince of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen ( born June 25, 1843 Castle Inzigkofen, † December 2, 1904 in Munich) was a member of the House of Hohenzollern -Sigmaringen and Prussian cavalry general.

Life

He was the fourth son of Prince Karl Anton of Hohenzollern- Sigmaringen and Princess Josephine (1813-1900), daughter of Grand Duke Karl of Baden. End of September 1859 he moved to Bonn, where the prince finished his training. In the years 1861 to 1864 Friedrich undertook long journeys to Austria, Italy, Switzerland and England. In the 1860s and 1870s more joined Travel to Italy, Egypt and Greece.

In the autumn of 1862 Prince Friedrich Eugen began his military career in the Prussian army. His first association was stationed in Dusseldorf Westfälische Uhlan Regiment No. 5, which he was assigned as a lieutenant. With this association in 1866 he took part also in the Austro-Prussian War. With the transfer to the 1st Guards Dragoon Regiment and promoted to captain in the spring of 1870, the relocation of Frederick was connected to Berlin. Just a few months later, the association was moved to the west and took part in the Franco-German War of 1870 /71.

Prince Karl Anton thought about whether not only his eldest son Leopold, but also for the Spanish throne, Frederick would candidacy in question. Leopold was initially little interest, as well as his wife, the Portuguese Antonia (1845-1913), already out of patriotism refused this. Queen Victoria and Kaiser Wilhelm I was rather skeptical. Karl Friedrich Anton's hope proved to be erroneous. Karl told the Kaiser Wilhelm I.: "Prinz Friedrich stocks with determination to rejection of adoption of the Spanish crown ."

Family

On June 21, 1879, he married in Regensburg Princess Louisa von Thurn und Taxis ( 1859-1948 ), daughter of Hereditary Prince Maximilian Anton ( 1831-1867 ) and Duchess Helene in Bavaria ( 1834-1890 ), a niece of Empress Elisabeth of Austria. The couple had no children. In the family Friedrich was considered a quiet, almost phlegmatic, but also smart, warm and funny.

He was buried on 6 December 1904 in the Church of the Redeemer in Sigmaringen.
