Prince Frederik of Hesse

Frederick of Hesse -Cassel ( born May 24, 1771 in Gottorp, † February 24, 1845 in Panker ) was a Danish general, governor of Norway ( 1810-1813 ) and governor of Schleswig -Holstein ( 1836-1842 ).

He was the son of Charles of Hesse -Kassel (1744-1836) and his wife Princess Louise of Denmark ( 1750-1831 ).

Life

From small to him a military career was predetermined. In 1778 he was already colonel, 1783 Major General and Lieutenant General in 1789. In 1801 he was awarded the Medal elephants.

In 1808 he became commander of the fortress of Rendsburg and Inspector of Infantry in Schleswig -Holstein. In July 1809 he was ordered to Norway to replace the local governor Christian August of Schleswig -Holstein -Sonderburg- August Castle, the Swedish throne had been offered and to whose loyalty is therefore now had doubts. He remained there until 23 May 1813 when he was replaced by Prince Christian. In 1813 he was still Grand Commander of the Dannebrog.

He was now commander in chief of the Danish auxiliaries who supported Napoleon. After the Battle of Leipzig, he withdrew to Rendsburg. In the battle of Sehested he was able to defeat the Russian General of Wallmoden.

After the Peace of Kiel on 14 January 1814, the troops fought under Frederick now against Napoleon. 1818 returned the troops from France, and Frederick was again governor of Rendsburg. After the death of his father in 1836 he succeeded him as governor of Schleswig -Holstein. He had the position until 1842. Afterwards it withdrew to his estate Panker on the Baltic Sea, where he died in 1845.

Family

In Oslo in 1813 he married Clare of Brockdorff (* January 16, 1778; † August 24, 1836 ) in a morganatic marriage. She was the daughter of Detlev von Brockdorff (1709-1790) and divorced from Baron Andreas Ernst Christian Liliencron ( 1774-1823 ). The couple had no children.
