Prince Nicholas of Greece and Denmark

Prince Nicholas of Greece (born 9 Januarjul / January 21 1872greg in Athens, .. † February 8, 1938 in Athens ) was the third son of the Greek King George I and his wife Olga Romanova Konstantinovna.

Life

Nicholas was born in 1872 as the fourth child of the Greek royal couple in Athens. His father George was a brother of the Russian Tsarina Maria Feodorovna and Nicholas thus cousin of Tsar Nicholas II, so he was called in the family, only the Greek Nicky. Prince Nicholas devoted his spare time to painting and his talent was also granted. He signed his works with the abbreviation Nicolas Leprince.

In Tsarskoye Selo, he married on August 29, 1902, the Russian Grand Duchess Helen of Russia, the daughter of Vladimir Alexandrovich. Together they had three children:

  • Elisabeth of Greece and Denmark (1904-1955) ∞ 1934 Karl Theodor, Count Toerring Jette Bach ( 1900-1967 )
  • Marina (1906-1968) ∞ George, 1st Duke of Kent ( 1902-1942 )

Together with his brothers Constantine and George Nicholas helped the first Olympic Games of the modern era to prepare. He also served as the President of the shooting competitions.

In his brother and King Constantine Greek-Turkish war, he led the army along with his younger brother Andrew. The crushing defeat of the Greek troops at Constantinople Opel was placed the two princes to the load. The public urged her to go into exile.

He died on February 8, 1938 in Athens, and was buried in the Royal Cemetery at Tatoi.
