Princess Anna of Saxony (1836–1859)

Anna Maria Karoline Johanna Luisa Maximiliane Stephania Xaveria Nepomucena Aloysia Benedicta of Saxony ( born January 4, 1836 in Dresden, † February 10, 1859 in Naples) was a Saxon princess from the Albertine line of the Wettin dynasty and by marriage, Hereditary Grand Duchess of Tuscany.

Life

Anna Maria was a daughter of King John of Saxony (1801-1873) from his marriage to Amalie Auguste (1801-1877), daughter of King Maximilian I Joseph of Bavaria.

Anna Maria's father was a close friend of the Grand Duke Leopold II of Tuscany; their families were linked by several marriages. Early had been negotiating a marriage of the heir to the throne with a Saxon princess. Princess Anna Maria married on November 24, 1856 in Dresden, later to become the Grand Duke Ferdinand IV of Tuscany ( 1835-1908 ), whom she had met two years earlier at Ferdinand Brautfahrt.

She was awarded the Star Cross Order. Grand Duchess Anna Maria died only 23 years old, due to the stillbirth of her second child and was buried in the Basilica of Santa Chiara in Naples. Grand Duke Leopold II, Ferdinand's father, abdicated on July 21, 1859 in favor of his son, thus became five months after Anna Maria's death, her widower, the last Grand Duke of Tuscany.
