Princess Feodora of Saxe-Meiningen (1890–1972)

Feodora Karola Charlotte Marie Adelheid Auguste Mathilde of Saxe- Meiningen (* May 29, 1890 in Hannover, † March 12, 1972 in Freiburg im Breisgau) was a Princess of Saxe -Meiningen and by marriage last Grand Duchess of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach.

Life

Princess Feodora was the eldest child of Prince Friedrich of Saxe- Meiningen (1861-1914) from his marriage with Adelheid (1870-1948), daughter of Count Ernst of Lippe - Biesterfeld and sister of the last prince of Lippe.

She married on 4 January 1910 in Meiningen Grand Duke Wilhelm Ernst of Saxe -Weimar- Eisenach ( 1876-1923 ). On the occasion of the marriage, a coin was minted. The 3 Mark Silver Coin of the German Reich was the official currency. The coins are considered rare because they have the stamp error Wilheim instead of William.

Wilhelm Ernst's first marriage with Caroline Reuss Greiz had remained childless. From this she took over the patronage of the "Patriotic Institute of Women's Associations ", which rose in 1930 in the German Red Cross. Later, she was a senior head of the Central Board of the Women's Associations of the Red Cross in Saxony- Weimar. In 1912, Karl August was born with the heir to the throne. 1918 Feodora accompanied her husband after his abdication in the November revolution in the Silesian exile in Heinrichau. In 1932 she put on Goethe's 100th anniversary together with Chancellor Heinrich Brüning in an act of state of the Weimar Republic to its grave the wreath. In 1937, she earned by Melchior Lechter whose painting " Shambella ", which he could finance a trip to Switzerland.

After the Grand Ducal family had fled after the Second World War in the Western occupation zones whose property was confiscated during the Soviet occupation zone. As agents of the family Feodora waived by signature on the Goethe- Schiller Archive under the condition that it is converted to a private foundation, and the family fortune would be released. The dispute over the archive between the family and the state of Thuringia continues as before.

Werner Deetjen dedicated to the Grand Duchess his book " On heights Etter valuables", 1924. According to the Grand Duchess Feodora the promenade in Eisenach Kartaus is named, as is the Feodorastraßen in Weimar ( 1952 Schillstraße renamed) and Gera. The latter was renamed in 1950 in the wake of street renaming " militaristic, fascist and anti-democratic " people from the city of Gera in Otto - Dix- road advice.
