Punata Province

Punata is one of sixteen provinces in the central part of the department of Cochabamba in the South American Andes State of Bolivia.

Location

The province is located on the southwestern edge of the Bolivian Cordillera Oriental in close proximity to the city of Cochabamba. It is bounded on the northwest by the province of Chapare, to the west by the province of Germán Jordán, to the south by the province of Esteban Arce, on the southeast by the province Mizque, on the east by the province of Arani, and the north- east by the province Tiraque.

The province extends from about 17 ° 27 'and 17 ° 45' south latitude and 66 ° 09 ' and 66 ° 23' west longitude, its extent from east to west is 20 kilometers from north to south, 35 km.

Population

The population of the province Punata has risen in the past two decades by about 15 percent, especially in the second decade:

41.5 percent of the population are younger than 15 years, the literacy rate in the province is 78.2 percent. (1992)

76.4 percent of the population speak Spanish, 94.3 percent speak Quechua, Aymara and 0.7 percent. (1992)

28.5 percent of the population have no access to electricity, 76.4 percent have no sanitary facilities (1992).

94.7 percent of the population are Catholics, 3.8 percent are Protestant (1992).

The Punata province is divided into five municipios:

  • Municipio Cuchumuela - 1,808 inhabitants ( 2001 census )
  • Municipio Punata - 26,140 inhabitants
  • Municipality of San Benito - 12,720 inhabitants
  • Municipio Tacachi - 1,210 inhabitants
  • The municipality of Villa Rivero - 5,857 inhabitants
