Qatar national football team

The Qatar national football team is the national team of Qatar Football Association and the Gulf State of Qatar.

The Qataris denied on March 27, 1970 its first international international match during the Gulf Cup tournament against Bahrain, the game ended with a 1-2 defeat to Qatar. Mubarak Faraj scored the first international goal in the country during this game.

The qualifying for the FIFA World Cup Qatar 1977 took part for the first time, then, Kuwait proved too strong opponent - the Qataris were only able to win a game against Bahrain. 1982 failed Qatar to Saudi Arabia and 1986 on Iraq. During qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 1990 team was the first time on the first round of qualifying, but resigned after a defeat against North Korea. 1998 and 2002 also the second round was reached, but the teams of Saudi Arabia and China proved too strong opponents. During qualifying for the FIFA World Cup 2006 Qatar was third in the group behind Iran and Jordan and retired. As part of the qualification for the World Cup 2010 Qatar met in the first round in Australia, Iraq and China. In this group, the team was behind Australia, but secure the second place, thus qualifying for the final round before the Asian champions Iraq and China. There, they met again on Australia and on Japan, Bahrain and Uzbekistan, retired prematurely, however, as a group of fourth.

The first participation in the qualification for the Asian Cup was in 1976, then Qatar, however, was third in the group and retired. At the final round to four years later then took part in 1980-2007 took Qatar, with the exception of 1996 ( where it failed in the qualifying Syria ) every time some, but mostly different from in the first round. 2000, they reached the quarter-finals as one of the two best third. In the Asia Cup 2011 in their own country Qatar reached in the first round to second place and qualified for the quarter-finals, where, however, the eventual winner Japan was defeated.

In 1984 and 1992, qualified the Qatari selection for the Olympic Games. In 1992, one quarter-final, but failed there at the finalists Poland.

Qatar won the 1992 first Gulf Cup in their own country and ended the Iraqi- Kuwaiti dominance of the tournament. 2004 the team repeated this success when they turn in their own country won the cup.

In 1981, the U -20 selection of the country participated in the Junior World Cup and reached after victories over Brazil and England the final, which was, however, lost 0-4 against the West German selection.

Participation at the Olympic Games

After 1988, senior national teams no longer participated in the Olympic Games. The Olympic team qualified in 1992 and retired from there in the quarterfinals to eventual silver medalist Poland.
