Quarantine Iceland / Kamau Taurua is the largest island in the Otago Harbour, close to the city of Dunedin, New Zealand.

The island has an area of 15 hectares and is largely a public recreation area. The main buildings are included in the list of the New Zealand Historic Places Trust.

The smaller island Goat Iceland / Rangiriri is close to Quarantine Iceland. Both islands are located opposite the harbor between the town of Port Chalmers and Portobello Marine Laboratory on Portobello Peninsula.

History

Between 1863 and 1924, the island served as a quarantine station for incoming ships in Otago. Had the teams infectious diseases, they were sent to the island until they were doing better or they died. On the island there is a small cemetery. After the quarantine station had been closed, the island was leased. Since 1958, the St. Martin Community Iceland uses the island for work and worship. During this time the island was reforested.

Under the agreement with the Ngai Tahu in 1996, the island received as part of the official name of the original Māori name Kamau Taurua on German court to provide networks.

Only a single quarantine building is retained and is currently (2010) being restored.
