Queens

Queens [ kwi ː nz ] is the largest area of ​​the five boroughs ( boroughs ) of New York City in the United States. It is located in the west of the island of Long Iceland and coincides with Queens County. In 2004, Queens had about two million inhabitants.

History

Queens was established on 1 November 1683, when the English colony of New York was divided into counties. It was incorporated in 1898 to New York City. From the eastern part of Queens County, the new Nassau County was formed in 1898, because the inhabitants of the eastern part of Queens County against the annexation to New York City had voted.

The name Queens ( Queens County actually ) is in honor of "Queen" Catherine of Braganza ( 1638-1705 ), wife of King Charles II of England ( 1630-1685 ). The name for this new populated land was awarded in 1683 by the first British emigrants.

In Queens, the two international airports of New York, the John F. Kennedy International Airport and LaGuardia Airport are. Local attractions include, among others, the Isamu Noguchi Garden Museum, the Queens Museum of Art and the Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge Center.

Population structure

Queens has, even by New York standards, a very large ethnic diversity. The residents of the district come from 100 different countries and speak 168 different languages. 46.6 % of the population were born outside the United States. 27.6 % of the population are non- Hispanic whites, 27.5 % are Hispanics who are mainly from the Dominican Republic, Colombia, Ecuador, Peru, Mexico and Puerto Rico, 22.9 % Asian, mainly from China, India, Bangladesh and the Philippines and 19.1 % black.
