R. Holland Duell

Rodolphus Holland Duell ( born December 20 1824 in Warren, New York, † February 11, 1891 in Cortland, New York) was an American lawyer and politician. Between 1859 and 1863, and 1871-1875, he represented the State of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives.

Career

Rodolphus Holland Duell was born about ten years after the end of the British - American War in Herkimer County. He completed his preliminary studies. He then studied law. After receiving his license to practice law in 1845, he began practicing in Fabius. He retired in 1847 and Cortland. Between 1850 and 1855 he was district attorney in Cortland County and 1855-1859 Judge there. Politically, he was a member of the Republican Party.

In the congressional elections of 1858 for the 36th Congress duel in the 21st electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives in Washington DC chosen, where he became the successor of Henry Bennett on March 4, 1859. After a re-election, he retired after March 3, 1863 from the Congress. In the 37th Congress he had presided over the Committee on Revolutionary Claims.

After his conference time he went to Cortland again his work as a lawyer after. He was also the 1869-1871 Assessor for tax revenue in the 23rd District of New York.

In 1870 he stood as a candidate in the 23rd electoral district of New York for the 42nd Congress. After a successful election, he entered on March 4, 1871, to succeed Dennis McCarthy. In the congressional elections of 1872 for the 43rd Congress, he was elected in the 24th electoral district of New York in the U.S. House of Representatives, where he became the successor of John E. Seeley on March 4, 1873. He retired after March 3, 1875 from the Congress. In the 43rd Congress, he had the chair the Committee on Expenditures on Public Buildings.

President Ulysses S. Grant appointed him on October 1, 1875 United States Commissioner of Patents - a position which he held until January 30, 1877. Then he went to Cortland again his work as a lawyer after, where he died on 11 February 1891. His body was then buried in Cortland Rural Cemetery.
