Dennis McCarthy (congressman)

Dennis McCarthy ( born March 19, 1814 Salina, Onondaga County, New York, † February 14, 1886 in Syracuse, Onondaga County, New York ) was an American politician ( Republican).

Career

Dennis McCarthy pursued an academic career. He attended Valley Academy in Salina. Then he went to the extraction of salt. McCarthy also pursued a political career. He was in 1846 a member of the New York State Assembly. Then he was mayor of Syracuse in 1853. McCarthy was elected to the 40th U.S. Congress and re-elected in the following 41 U.S. Congress. He served in the U.S. House of Representatives from March 4, 1867 to March 3, 1871. In 1870 his candidacy for the 42nd U.S. Congress, however, he suffered a defeat. Then he went back to his previous transactions. McCarthy was 1876-1885 Member of the Senate of New York. During this time he held the post of president in 1885 per Tempore. It was dated January 6, 1885 to January 1, 1886 for Lieutenant Governor of New York. McCarthy died in 1886 in Syracuse, where he was buried at the St. Agnes Cemetery.
