Robert Duffy (politician)

Robert John Duffy ( born August 21, 1954 in Rochester, New York ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. He has since January 1, 2011 Lieutenant Governor of the State of New York under Governor Andrew Cuomo. Previously, he held since 2006, the office of mayor of his home city of Rochester.

Life

Duffy was born in Rochester in 1954, after graduating from high school in 1972, he began a course of study in the field of criminology. From 1976 he worked for the police of his town, where he rose to captain. In 1998 he was appointed head of the city police. After the former mayor of Rochester, William A. Johnson, announced in 2005 that he would not again stand for election and to say goodbye to retire, Duffy announced his candidacy for this office. After winning election, he joined it at the beginning of 2006.

Prior to the gubernatorial elections of 2010, he was selected by the Democratic candidate Andrew Cuomo for the highest office in New York as his running mate. Robert Duffy was consequently nominated by the Democrats and voted with Cuomo in November 2010 as Vice- Governor of New York. The duo won through clear with 62 % of votes. Thomas S. Richards took over after the office of mayor of Rochester. On 1 January 2011 Duffy was sworn in as lieutenant governor.

Duffy has been married since 1986 and has two children.
