Rafael Viñoly

Rafael Viñoly Beceiro ( born June 1, 1944 in Montevideo ) is an American architect of Uruguayan origin. He lives and works since 1978 in the United States.

Life

Viñoly was born as the son of film and theater director Román Viñoly Barreto and mathematics teacher Maria Beceiro. His degree in architecture, he received in 1968 from the Universidad de Buenos Aires and a Master of Architecture at the local school of architecture and urban planning, a year later. In 1964 he founded with six other architects architectural firm, which grew later into one of the largest in South America. In 1978 he went with his family to the United States, where he taught briefly as a Gastlecturer at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and then permanently in 1979 settled in New York City, where he founded in 1983, Rafael Viñoly Architects. His first major project was there that John Jay College of Criminal Justice (1988). In 1989 he won the international design competition for the International Forum Tokyo, which was completed in 1996 and today is one of the most important cultural complex in Japan. Rafael Viñoly Architects was also one of the finalists in the design competition for the World Trade Center, the then Daniel Libeskind won. Viñoly is responsible for the mentioned draft Walkie Talkie skyscraper 20 Fenchurch Street, already caused the concave and mirrored façade with a burning glass effect more damage by focused sunlight. A similar problem occurs when also designed by Rafael Viñoly Vdara Hotel in Las Vegas.

Viñoly is a Fellow of the American Institute of Architects (AIA ), International Fellow of the Royal Institute of British Architects ( RIBA ) and a member of the Japan Institute of Architects (JIA ) and the Sociedad Central de Arquitectos (SCA ).
