Raimundo Correia

Raimundo Correia da Mota de Azevedo (* May 13, 1859 at Mogúncia, Maranhao, Brazil, † September 13, 1911 in Paris, France) was a Brazilian poet and lawyer. He was a major representative of the Brazilian late romanticism and Parnassism, also a founding member of the Academia Brasileira de Letras.

Life

Raimundo Correia had an unusual birth: He was on the Brazilian ship São Luis, which was anchored at this time off the coast of the province of Maranhão born. His family were members of the Brazilian upper classes, with contacts to the imperial house. His father was Jose Mota de Azevedo Correia, his mother was Maria Clara Vieira da Silva. As a child he went to Rio de Janeiro, where he attended the Colegio Nacional, one of the leading boarding schools in the country. Among his fellow students there included children who later to the political and cultural elite of Brazil were: Raul Pompeio, Teofilo Dias, Eduardo Prado, Affonso Celso Augusto de Lima, Valentim Magalhães Silva Jardim. After leaving school, he began in 1877 to study law at the Law Faculty of the University of São Paulo.1879 - still a student - he had his literary debut with the poetry collection " Primeiros Sonhos ". After finishing his studies in 1884 he moved to the State of Rio de Janeiro, where he served as official judge and orphans in cities like São João da Barra and Vassourense worked. He also wrote for the first time a magazine: For " O Vassourense ", a cultural magazine of the city, which had been founded by the poet, musician and humanist Lucindo Filho (1847-1896), he published an essay.

In 1884 he had married Mariana sodre. In 1889 he went to the local politics and became Secretary of State of the Gouverneurats the state of Rio de Janeiro. For health reasons, he went to Paris in 1911, where he died shortly after his arrival at the consequences of his illness. His body was interred in Paris until 1920 and was then transferred to Brazil.

Romantic and parnassisches work

Correia is often referred to as late romantics, especially by his first work " Primeiros Sonhos ". Even by his second work " Sinfonia " he was inclined to the Parnassism. The sonnet "As Pombas " is considered one of the best and most famous sonnets Portuguese in the 19th century. Academia Brasileira de Letras
