Action

The focus of the series is about a 16 -year-old Ranma Saotome, a talented martial artist. His father, Genma Saotome, it already betrothed as an infant with one of the three daughters of his friend Soun Tendō to secure the continuation of the " everything-is - possible - fighting school for fights of all kinds ." The story starts with the arrival at the TENDO and the announcement of the deal. The choice falls to the youngest daughter, Akane Tendō. Henceforth the Saotomes also live in the TENDO on whose land also said fighting school is located. While at the beginning the relationship between the two is extremely tense and both reject the engagement, they realize in the course of action that they secretly feel something for each other. The situation is complicated by the fact that Ranma, his father and other characters have fallen into an enchanted sources and since then a curse on them, transforms them in contact with cold water in another form. So Ranma (hence the suffix " 1- of -2") transforms into a girl and his father into a giant panda, and only with hot water, the effect can be reversed.

As the story progresses, more and more characters appear who have a relationship with Ranma or Akane, or want to build, so that the two are constantly involved in fights.

Genre and style

Ranma ½ is characterized by quirky characters, a host of comic scenes, arising from the fact that Ranma turns into inappropriate moments in a girl, quick change from tragic, quiet and comical moments and by playing with expectations and "traditional" gender roles. Thus, for example, Ranma a typical macho, but scenes in which he emphasizes his masculinity are often ridiculed, eg when he comes into contact with cold water. As a girl, then he either retains his macho behavior when or where to camouflage his alter ego a completely coated girlish behavior on display.

Frequently typical elders of ridicule are revealed, for example, as a tearful father, child or teacher Lingerie collecting martial arts master.

Martial arts is an essential element in Ranma ½ and is also parodied extensively. In the series there are so weird martial arts and martial arts competitions such as figure skating, gymnastics and cheerleading.

Ranma ½ also contains many original Japanese puns, however, can hardly be translated and thus missing in the German version mostly.
