Raul Brandão

Raul Germano Brandão ( born March 12, 1867 in Foz do Douro, Portugal, † December 5, 1930 in Lisbon, Portugal) was a Portuguese writer. His work is characterized mainly by the appearance of simple and austere life in Portugal, especially the peasants and fishermen.

Life

Brandão was the son of a fisherman, hence came his interest in issues of ordinary country people of Portugal. He started in Porto to study, but abandoned his studies and joined the army. In 1890 he published his first book " Impressões e Paisagens " ( Impressions and Landscapes ).

Brandão Guimarães 1896 was transferred to the 20th Infantry Regiment, where she learned to know his future wife. They married a year later and built themselves in the nearby town Nespereira a house. There she led a fairly zurückgezogenenes life, interrupted by a few extended stays in Lisbon and other places. In 1924 he attended the then little- known Azores and then in 1926 published the work "As ilhas desconhecidas - Notas e paisagens " ( The unknown islands - records and landscapes). This book had a lasting influence the image of the Azores in Europe. After he left the army in 1912, began his most creative period.

Brandãos work comprises memoirs ( three volumes, 1919, 1925, 1933), novels, plays and travelogues as well as a children's book. He also wrote many articles for various newspapers. His plays were played on the stages in Lisbon. The only into German transferred work is the novel " The Fisherman" by 1923.

Main themes of his work are death and the isolation of the people connected with the so typical of Portugal pantheism. Also described are the threatened with extinction worlds of fishermen, farmers and ordinary people, as the chronicler he saw himself.
