Rauwiller

Rauwiller (German Rauweiler ) is a commune with 219 inhabitants (as of 1 January 2011) in the Crooked Alsace in the department of Bas- Rhin in the Alsace region. The municipality is part of the arrondissement Saverne and is a member of the Communauté de communes d'Alsace Bossue.

The village is situated near the border with Lorraine. A few kilometers east of the auto route runs A4 ( Autoroute de l' Est). The short road to the neighboring department Kirrberg wears the number 1 After Saverne in the east it is some 25 km, Strasbourg is about 70 km away to the southeast.

The first mention of the place is as Rugwiller in 1288, in a document of 1344 he is called Ruwiller. In the 15th century the site was abandoned and was repopulated in 1599 by Huguenot refugees. In the Thirty Years' War the place of imperial troops was badly damaged. In the fall of 1944, the city suffered from devastation in the wake of the fighting for the liberation of France towards the end of the Second World War.
