Ray Mabus

Raymond Edwin " Ray" Mabus ( born October 11, 1948 in Starkville, Oktibbeha County, Mississippi ) is an American politician of the Democratic Party. He is the current Navy Secretary ( Secretary of the Navy ) of the United States.

Life

Mabus was born in 1948 in Oktibbeha County, Mississippi. He has three degrees: a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Mississippi (summa cum laude, 1969), a master's in political science from Johns Hopkins University (1970) and a Law degree from Harvard University ( magna cum laude, 1976). From 1971 to 1972 he served in the U.S. Navy and went to the cruiser USS Little Rock.

In 1983 he was elected State Auditor of Mississippi, an office which he held until 1987, when he contested the gubernatorial election and the Republican Jack Reed suggested. In 1988, he was sworn in as governor. During his tenure, he launched the educational program Better Education for Success Tomorrow, for which he was awarded in 1990 by Fortune as Top Ten Governor for education policy. His re-election missed Mabus just when he lost against Kirk Fordice, who replaced him in 1992 as governor.

1994 sent U.S. President Bill Clinton Mabus for two years as ambassador to Saudi Arabia; his successor in Riyadh was Wyche Fowler.

On 19 May 2009 Mabus was sworn in as Secretary of the Navy under President Barack Obama, after he was unanimously confirmed by Congress.
