Walter Leake

Walter Leake ( born May 25, 1762, Albemarle County, Virginia, USA, † November 17, 1825 in Mount Salus, Mississippi, United States ) was an American politician and Governor of Mississippi in the years 1822-1825.

Biography

Walter Leake studied law and practiced in Hinds County thereupon (Mississippi). In 1807, Leake was determined by U.S. President Thomas Jefferson to a judge of the Territory of Mississippi. His entry into politics was in 1817, after he was elected as a member of the Party of the Democratic-Republican Party, for the now established the state of Mississippi in the U.S. Senate. Leake was involved among other things, instrumental in the annexation of the Mississippi River to the Union. He exercised his office of 10 December 1817 to 15 May 1820. From 1821 to 1822 Leake exercised the office of Federal judge from Mississippi, and ran successfully in 1821 for the governorship. Leakes term began on January 7, 1822, and ended with his death four years later.

Walter Leake was married, and had three children with his wife Elizabeth. One of his descendants is John McCain, 1987 U.S. Senator from Arizona.
