Leake County, Mississippi

The Leake County is a county located in the U.S. state of Mississippi. The administrative headquarters ( County Seat) is Carthage, which was named after the North African city of Carthage. The county is one of the Dry counties, which means that the sale of alcohol is restricted or prohibited.

History

The Leake County was formed on December 23, 1833 from parts of the Choctaw country. It was named after Walter Leake (1762-1825), Senator (1817-1820) and Governor of Mississippi ( 1822-1825 ).
