Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz

Heinrich Friedrich Reinhard Kekulé von Stradonitz ( born March 6, 1839 in Darmstadt, † March 23, 1911 in Berlin) was a German archaeologist Classic from the family of Kekulé Stradonitz.

Life

Kekule was born as the son of the Darmstadt Hofgerichtsadvokaten Karl Ludwig Kekule (1802-1843), with noble Bohemian ancestors. After studying classical philology and archeology in Erlangen, Göttingen and Berlin, he received his doctorate in 1861 and was followed two years assistant to the Berlin archaeologist Eduard Gerhard. From 1863 to 1866 Kekulé was at the German Archaeological Institute of Rome and his habilitation in 1868 in Bonn. After a short stint at the Museum of Antiquities of Nassau in Wiesbaden, he became in 1870 Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Bonn. 1889 went Kekulé as director of the collection of antique sculptures and plaster casts at the Royal Museums in Berlin. From 1896 he was also director of the Antiquarium and thus the united Berlin Collection of Classical Antiquities. In 1890 Kekulé was also Professor of Classical Archaeology at the University of Berlin. He held the office of dean in 1897 and in the academic year 1901/1902 the Rector of the University.

Since 1874 Kekulé was a member of the Central Board of the German Archaeological Institute ( DAI). In 1898 he was admitted as a full member of the Prussian Academy of Sciences. Since 1905 he was Chairman of the Archaeological Society of Berlin. 1895 was his cousin Friedrich August Kekulé von Stradonitz the recognition of the old Bohemian nobility named Kekule von Stradonitz.

Focus of Kekulé research activity was the ancient Greek sculpture. In addition, he also dealt with terra-cotta; for the DAI he published the series The ancient terracottas. As a museum director, he continued the excavations of the Berlin museums, especially in Asia Minor. The collection of antiques presented Kekulé in the Altes Museum scratch. During his tenure, the finds from Pergamum were temporarily exhibited in the first Pergamon Museum.
