Reschensee

Church tower in the lake

The Reschensee (Italian Lago di Resia ) is a reservoir in the village of Graun in the western South Tyrol. The artificial lake is six kilometers long and at the widest points about a kilometer wide and has a water capacity of 120 million m³. The villages Reschen, grays and San Valentino alla Muta are at Reschensee, where Reschen, Graun and the hamlets Kaschon (St. Valentine ) and Spin ( Graun ) lie directly on the lake.

On Reschenpass there were up to 1950 Seestauung three lakes: the Reschensee, Mittersee (also called the Graun lake ) and the Muta. When Seestauung the entire village of Graun and a large part of the village Resia was sunk in the waters of the reservoir. 163 houses were destroyed and flooded 523 hectares of fertile top soil. Today, only the church tower projecting from the Reschensee from sunken Alt- Graun ( 46.81 N, 10.537 O) 46.81065710.536661 testifies.

History

In 1939, the first project from 1920 to the impoundment of the lakes ( Reschen and Mittersee ) by the then government from 5 to 22 meters was changed ( 17 meters). The inhabitants were forcibly expropriated " the national interest to strengthen national industry" and forced to removal or relocation. A right to compensation in kind did not exist. In the summer of 1950, the buildings were blown up and flooded. The Romanesque tower from the 14th century was allowed to stand for the sake of preservation. For electricity the villages of Graun and (partially) Reschen and the ancient hamlet of Arlund, Piz, Gorf and Stocker yards (St. Valentine ) were flooded. It created a reservoir with 677 hectares.

In the years after 1973, the South Tyrolean provincial government has carried out extensive remedial measures. Approximately 35 hectares of cultivated land have been reclaimed with material from the reservoir.

The consequences of impoundment:

  • 70 % of the population has moved out or
  • 163 houses and farm buildings were blown up
  • Destroyed 514 ha of cultivated area
  • 70 % fewer livestock

Sports

To the Reschensee performs a hiking, Nordic walking and jogging track, which is 15.3 km long. The Reschensee itself is a fishing area, live there whitefish ( whitefish ), lake trout, perch, rainbow trout and pike.

Located along the west side of the lake is the bottom station of the six -passenger gondola to the ski Belpiano. There in the winter is possible to connect to multiple chair lifts and two surface lifts.

The relatively high wind speeds make at Reschensee with wind related sports possible. In the summer months the lake of kite surfers will be investigated. In winter, the Reschensee is a meeting place for ice yachts, snowkiting and Eissurfer.

Since 2008, the International German Snowkitemeisterschaften take place on the frozen Reschensee. Because the lake in contrast to many German Snowkite areas a high snow and wind provides security, the organizers have chosen him as a regular venue for the championships. He is also due to its location in the triangle South Tyrol - also easily accessible for active drivers from other Alpine countries, Switzerland - Austria. Since this is an open championship, take next German sportsmen among other activists from Austria, Switzerland, Italy, Scandinavia and Eastern Europe in part.
