Revoltella Museum

The Civico Museo Revoltella - Galleria d' Arte Moderna ( German Municipal Museum Revoltella - Gallery of Modern Art) is the biggest art-historical museum in the northern Italian city of Trieste and is one of the most important art galleries in Italy. It was founded in 1872 from the estate of Baron Pasquale Revoltella Trieste and in addition to the original residential facility, the library and art collection of Baron also includes works from the late 19th century and the 20th century.

History

The museum was founded in 1872 from the estate of Baron Pasquale Revoltella Trieste, located in the former city residence at Piazza Venezia in the district of Borgo Giuseppino. Revoltella left his palace design already during his lifetime so that it could later be used as a museum, and put this reason special attention to the decoration and interior of the building. With planning, it commissioned the Berlin architect Friedrich Hitzig, who completed the building set 1858.

At his death in 1869 bequeathed to the municipality of Trieste Revoltella his city residence. His last will, according to the building and the art collection contained therein have been made available to the public. Since a clause of the gift provided that all contemporary art movements have been accounted for by purchases, today's museum includes not only the original residential facility, the library and the art collection of Baron, but also works from the late 19th century and the 20th century.

Looking for new spaces for the ever-growing collection of artworks the city of Trieste in 1907 acquired the Palazzo Brunner later the adjacent Palazzo Basevi, so that the premises of the museum today extend next to the former residence Revoltellas and a complete building block. With the renovation and alteration work of the two newly acquired building, however, was begun in 1963. The project was the Italian architect Carlo Scarpa transferred but not completed until after his death in 1992.

The current exhibition of the museum includes around 350 works, which are distributed to nearly 40 halls and six floors.
