Revue

The Revue (French for, Magazine ',' Overview ') is a sub-form of musical theater, and thus belongs to the performing arts. Similar to the related sub-forms operetta and musical revue combines the music, dance and spoken contributions to an overall performance; however, it is absent in contrast to these, a continuous storyline. Rather is a common theme - also a recent or historic event - as the motto for a loose series of individual performances - called " numbers" ( hence the term revue, see also Number Girl) - in which alternate solo performances and dance ensembles. Often the musical revue about overlaps with the variety show, which takes place more on a smaller scale and contains distinct artistic numbers, as well as the circus -like U.S. vaudeville. Furthermore, it may overlap with the cabaret provided, such as in the revues of Mischa Spoliansky.

History

The genus of the revue went from the end of the 19th century in Paris cabarets resulting from (Le Chat Noir, Folies Bergeres, Moulin Rouge) and had worldwide culminating in the 1920s. The origin were in Paris from about 1850 fairground parodies of the military, where dancers wore fancy uniforms and Crier commented on the action. Initially, these performances took place at the end. The Parisian operetta took such stylistic elements into itself, such as Jacques Offenbach's The Grand Duchess of Gerolstein (1867 ). The first equipment Revue applies the 1886 listed in the Folies Bergere Place aux Jeunes staging. At the Moulin Rouge revues were from 1889 to recurrent first time, fixed program points. Around the turn of the century they spread throughout Europe.

In America in 1907 Ziegfeld Follies were modeled on the French model. Soon they were the most successful shows on Broadway. A famous German revue theater in Berlin was the Grosses Schauspielhaus, today's Friedrichstadt-Palast, where Erik Charell produced his revues, another of Admiral Palace where Herman Haller showed the " Haller revues ". In addition to the performances of singers, actors, comedians, acrobats and dancers, the complex features (stage, stage machinery, mask, costumes ) played a significant role. Composers such as Paul Lincke, Victor Hollaender, Walter Kollo and Ralph Benatzky wrote special revues. For the development of the Schlager Revue has a great importance. In the 1930s, the decline of the Revue began. Especially at this time of emerging Revue film shifted the performance, from theater to the cinema. In the early days of television they experienced in this medium again an upswing. In retrospective musicals ( John Kander: Cabaret, 1966) (Stephen Sondheim: Follies, 1971) or films ( Federico Fellini: Ginger and Fred, 1986) are cited past revues ironic. With different artistic expression is the genre Revue today mainly practiced even by traditional vaudeville theaters like the Lido, Casino de Paris, Folies Bergeres, Moulin Rouge and the Friedrichstadt-Palast Berlin, but also in shows in Las Vegas.
