The ten machines were the first electric locomotives of the RhB without pinion drive. 1944 four engines were ordered from the Swiss Locomotive and Machine Works Winterthur ( SLM), set in July 1947, the first machine. Mainly used in express service, they proved themselves very well, so that the RhB 1953 ordered six more copies. Displaced in subordinate services they were with the deliveries of the Ge 6/ 6 II and the Ge 4/ 4 II Between 1986 and 1991, the locomotives were modernized, especially new more spacious cabs were grown and the locomotives equipped with multiple and remote control. Since then, some locomotives with lighter commuter trains in use, initially with upgraded center entrance cars, today consistently with standard cars. A long-standing area of operations the tunnel- rich route from Davos to Filisur, from 2009 reversed these compositions in the Engadine. The BoBo locomotives are now 80 km / h fast ( originally 75 km / h ) and have a capacity of 1,184 kW. They weigh 48 tons and are 12'100 mm long. On a 35 per mil pitch the towing capacity is 185 t, at 45 per thousand or 135 t.
The locomotives were given the names of the Grisons mountains, but two engines ( 607 and 610) were given the name of valleys in Graubünden, on the Canton area, the Rhaetian Railway operates its route network. The names are since the renovation in white letters on both sides in the middle of the roof edge, the car numbers 601-610 on the two end faces, as well as laterally below.
In November 2010 the Rhaetian Railway has begun to take the locomotives of this series after more than 50 years of service successively from service and scrapped. On 16 November 2010, the locomotive was scrapped as the first 601 in Chur, after the engines and other parts had been developed previously in the main workshops in the country Quart. The locomotive 603 " Badu " is retained, it is brought into the museum Augsburg Railway Park to Germany. The locomotive 602 " Bernina " was presented on March 7, 2012 at the Museum of Transport ( five-year loan).
